Spetses (Pityoussa), Saronic Gulf, Greece
Spetses, Saronic Gulf, Greece

Almost all accommodation on Spetses is in and around Spetses Town, the car-free island's only real settlement, from the centre by the Dapia port to the quieter seafront a short walk away. Cars are banned on Spetses, so you get around by bus, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, and staying near Spetses Town keeps the tavernas, cafes and the bus to every beach within easy reach.

Economou Mansion

Seafront

The Economou Mansion sits on the seafront, a 10-minute walk from the centre of Spetses. This traditional old mansion, built in 1851, is now a small pension that blends 19th-century furnishings and traditional decor with modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. The spacious suites have a large veranda overlooking the sea, and a traditional homemade breakfast is included in the room rate and served next to the pool. Guests can explore the gardens with their stone walls and pebbled courtyards, take a dip in the swimming pool, or relax in winter by the fireplace in the cosy living room.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Spetses?

Dapia, the main harbour, is the most central base, with the ferries, cafes and shops on your doorstep, while the seafront towards Kounoupitsa and the Old Harbour (Palio Limani) stays quieter. Almost all of Spetses' hotels sit in or just outside Spetses Town, so any of them keeps the centre within a short walk. On this page Hans reviews Kastro Studios & Apartments, 100 metres from Dapia port, and the seafront Economou Mansion.

Is Spetses worth visiting?

Yes, Spetses is worth visiting for its car-free town, neoclassical mansions and pine-clad coast. The green Saronic Gulf island lies close to Athens and is reached by ferry from Piraeus. Cars are banned, so you get around by bus, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, with tavernas and pebble beaches within easy walking distance.

Is Spetses expensive?

Spetses has long had a reputation as one of the more upmarket Saronic Gulf islands, popular with Athenian weekenders, so rooms and dining tend to sit above the Greek-island average in peak summer. Prices vary widely by property and season, so always confirm current rates directly with the hotel before booking.

Is Spetses a party island?

No, Spetses is not a party island in the way Mykonos or Ios are. The island is better known as an elegant, low-key destination, and its nightlife centres on bars and cocktail spots around the Old Harbour and Dapia rather than large clubs.
