Fourni Restaurants: Tavernas and Grilled Lobster in Fourni Town

Fourni serves its food in the harbour and the main street of Fourni Town, where fresh fish and grilled lobster cost a fraction of the price on larger Greek islands. Because most residents keep a fishing boat, the tavernas cook the day's catch, alongside oven-baked dishes and traditional Greek cooking served with fresh bread. Fourni Town, where the restaurants gather

Archipelagos restaurant

The Archipelagos restaurant belongs to the harbour hotel of the same name and sits at the edge of the port of Fourni Town, with a terrace on the pier. It serves breakfast, coffee and full meals, all organic and very well prepared, with big, tasty Greek salads, crispy fried chicken fillet, excellent mousaka, good tzatziki and a nice white house wine. It is the only place on Fourni where the fries come out really crisp, and the coffee is Illy. Despite the smarter setting, with proper china and tablecloths, it is no more expensive than the other tavernas. Hans's verdict: 9 out of 10.

Archontiko cafe

Cafe Archontiko stands in the port of Fourni Town, with a terrace in the shade of a large group of old tamarind trees. It serves breakfast, small snacks and coffee, and the cappuccino is a strong cup of Illy with whipped milk, brought with a biscuit and a glass of cold water. The one drawback is that it takes a long time to arrive, as in many Greek cafes. Hans's verdict: 8 out of 10.

Delfinakia

The Delfinakia restaurant and snack bar sits in the port of Fourni and stays open through the quiet afternoon hours when much else is closed, roughly between three and eight. It has no printed menu but offers hamburgers and a lot of fish, and the Greek salad and tzatziki are fine without being special. Hans's verdict: 7 out of 10.

H Kali Kardia

H Kali Kardia is at the end of the main street by the big church, with meat turning on a grill outside and older villagers sharing the tables with visitors. The Greek salad is good, the chicken giros with fries comes in a very large portion, the chicken is good and the fries are reasonably crisp, and the bread is very tasty. As often on Fourni, the people are friendly, and a free glass of wine arrives after the meal. Hans's verdict: 8 out of 10.

Koytoyki

Koytoyki sits on the main street that leads to the big church, with blue chairs and tables on both sides of the street and more tables inside. You choose from a large glass buffet, and it had the most original dishes of any restaurant Hans tried on the island, among them large beans, boiled potatoes, carrots, stuffed eggplants and a kind of tuna cream, with a tasty white wine. The bread comes in one piece, the service is extremely friendly, and dessert, a large dish of fruit with honey, arrives free. It is also very inexpensive. Hans's verdict: 9 out of 10.

Nikos taverna

Nikos was the first restaurant Hans tried in Fourni Town, on the quay at the corner of the main street, its chairs painted light blue. Nikos introduces himself and shakes hands in welcome, and guests are invited into the kitchen to look in the pots and pans and choose. The bread is fresh and in one piece, and the pasta with bacon, mushrooms and cheese, the tzatziki, the Greek salad, the lamb with spinach and spaghetti and the stuffed eggplants are all delightful. The only weak point is the soft fries. Hans's verdict: 9 out of 10.
