Amorgos Beaches: Aegiali, Maltezi, Agia Anna & Mouros

Amorgos has a good number of beaches, most of them small coves reached on foot or by boat, with the one easy organised beach at the port of Aegiali. The beaches fall into four areas: the Aegiali bay in the north-east, the Katapola side in the west, the east coast below the Chora and the Hozoviotissa monastery, and the remote south. Aegiali bay beaches

The bay of Aegiali in the north-east holds the island's easiest beaches. The organised beach of Aegiali is long, sandy and shallow, with trees for shade, tavernas, hotels and mini-markets on hand and sunbeds and parasols for rent — the safest choice for a family day. At the end of it lies Fokiotrypa, a small sandy beach with pebbles at the edges, quieter than Aegiali, ringed by steep cliffs, with shallow water and little current but no sunbeds. Twenty minutes' walk north is Levressos, a long sandy beach below high cliffs used as an unofficial naturist beach, reached on a path from Tholaria or by boat from Aegiali harbour in summer. Just beyond it, Psili Amos ("fine sand") and Hohlakas are two small, quiet coves in the cliffs, reached on foot or by boat, with trees for shade but no facilities.

Katapola beaches

The Katapola side in the west keeps the island's finest sandy beaches behind the headland. Katapola's own town beach is long but narrow, with some trees for shade and, towards Kastro, the remains of ancient Minoa nearby. The better beaches sit north-west of the port: Maltezi, often called the most beautiful beach on Amorgos, is reached by caique from Katapola or a 30 to 40 minute walk via Xilokeratidi, with sunbeds and parasols in high season and usually little wind even when the Meltemi blows. Next to it, Agios Panteleimon takes its name from the picturesque church above it and is the first stop for the small boats from Katapola. South of the port, Agioi Saranta, Finikes and Tirokomou are quiet sandy beaches with no facilities that catch the north wind, so they see high waves and currents.

East-coast beaches below the Chora

Below the Chora, on the east coast near the Hozoviotissa monastery, the beaches are pebbly and wild. Agia Anna lies about 3 km from the Chora, a pebble beach with no facilities and rocks in the sea, reached down the same cliff stairs that pass the monastery — the most photographed spot on the island. Next to the textile beach of Agia Anna, the coves of Sirma and Kambi (also called Ammoudi) are small pebble beaches below high cliffs, used partly by naturists, reached across Agia Anna and often windy.

The remote south and west

The south and the west coast reward those with their own transport. Agios Pavlos, about 8 km south of Aegiali opposite the islet of Nikouria, is a pebble beach near the road with a taverna; the sheltering islet keeps it calm, and in high season excursion boats run across to Nikouria, where three beaches lie about fifteen minutes away. In the far south-west, Kalotaritissa is a long, sheltered sand-and-pebble beach you can drive to, with sunbeds, a beach bar and boats to the uninhabited islet of Gramvousa ten minutes offshore. Nearby Paradisia and Kato Kambos are small, remote coves with no facilities, and Mouros in the south-east is a pebble beach reached through Arkesini, with two caves for snorkellers and naturism at its far end.

Naturist beaches

Amorgos has several beaches where naturism is common, mostly quiet coves away from the organised sand. Levressos, north of Aegiali, is the best-known unofficial naturist beach, a long sandy stretch below cliffs. Around Agia Anna, the small coves of Sirma and Kambi (Ammoudi) are used partly by naturists, and at Mouros naturism takes place at the far end of the beach, less so in high season. Quieter beaches such as Plakes, Agioi Saranta, Finikes and the coves south of Agios Pavlos also see naturism out of the busy months. None of these have facilities, so bring your own water and shade.
