Voreina Gallery Suites perch on a hillside in Pyrgos village with sunset views over the Aegean. It lies about 2 to 2.5 km from the Red Beach, 2 km from the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri and 11 km from Fira; Athinios Port is 9 km and the airport 14 km. The air-conditioned units have a seating area and a kitchenette with fridge and hobs, a safe and a flat-screen TV, and some a washing machine, with an a la carte breakfast delivered to your room. Rooms look out to the Caldera at the front and the village of Akrotiri with its castle and churches at the back, with paths down to several small, quiet beaches. Hans stayed here in May 2013 in a two-bedroom apartment with a large sea-view balcony; the welcome was warm and there are good restaurants a short walk away.

The Best Western The Museum Spa Wellness Hotel sits in the pedestrianised centre of Oia on the main street. Hans stayed here a few days in May 2013 in a two-room apartment with a living room with two sofa beds, a kitchen and a separate master bedroom, plus a terrace overlooking the street. There is a large pool behind the hotel and a very good breakfast buffet served in the breakfast room or by the pool.

San Efrem sits 150 metres from the centre of Perissa and 200 metres from Perissa beach, with self-catering rooms with a balcony. It has a large swimming pool with a sun terrace and pool bar and free private parking. Studios and apartments are decorated in Cycladic style with a kitchenette and fridge, and the apartments add a dining area; air conditioning is available at an extra charge. The airport is 15 km away.

Soulis Apartments stand just outside Oia, 100 metres from Kouloumpos beach, with 20 newly built traditional apartments. Each has air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, a TV and a sea-view balcony facing the famous sunset. Guests get a free shuttle to the port and airport and free transfers to and from Oia, plus free WiFi. The beach is a large, quiet sandy bay under a high cliff, suitable for naturists, with beautiful sunsets on this side of the island - a spot Hans would choose himself.

Villa Roula sits a short walk from Perissa Beach, with a large outdoor pool with a jacuzzi and a pool bar. This family-run hotel is built in the traditional style of Santorini; each comfortable room has an en-suite bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. Perissa's 7-km black-sand beach is one of the island's most striking, and a bus stop 50 metres away connects to the rest of Santorini.

The 4-star Atlantida Villas stand on the cliffside of Oia, with suites, apartments, studios and double rooms that each have a balcony or veranda overlooking the volcano, the sea and the cliffs. Guests can watch the sunsets for which Oia is famous, from what the hotel describes as the best views in the village.

Merovigliosso stands in Imerovigli, with a small swimming pool and sun terrace and partial views of the Caldera and the Aegean. The air-conditioned studios and apartments have a sea-view balcony and a fully equipped kitchen with coffee machine and fridge, and a continental breakfast is included, served on your balcony. It is close to shops and to Fira, with a bus station 150 metres away and free WiFi.

Marizan Villas sit at the highest point of Oia, right at the edge of the Caldera more than 200 metres above the sea, looking over the sunset and the Aegean. The studios are cave houses built into the rock on different levels, each with a balcony, TV, air conditioning, fridge and basic kitchen equipment; breakfast and daily maid service are included. A 4-person jacuzzi is available, and the centre of Oia with its restaurants, shops and wine museums is a 5-minute walk.
