Ammouliani (Amoliani), Greece: The Only Inhabited Island in Halkidiki

Ammouliani, Halkidiki, Greece
Ammouliani, Halkidiki, Greece

Ammouliani, also spelled Amoliani, is the only inhabited island in Halkidiki, a green island of about 500 people off the coast of northern Greece, reached by a 5-minute ferry from Tripiti near Ouranoupoli. It sits opposite the Athos peninsula in Central Macedonia and stays quiet, because no ferry route links it to other Greek islands. Sandy beaches such as Alykes, Agios Georgios and Megali Ammos ring the island, and the small Drenia islets lie just offshore to the south. It suits travellers who want an unspoilt island base for exploring Halkidiki rather than sights or nightlife.

The island & village

Ammouliani is the only inhabited island in Halkidiki and the only island of any size off its coast, in Central Macedonia in northern Greece. About 500 people live on it, most of them in the harbour village where the ferry arrives, and the island stays fairly unspoilt because it lies off the ferry routes. It is green and wooded, since it sits slightly further north than most Greek islands and receives more rainfall. The island has about 6 kilometres of made-up roads, and many hiking trails run from the village to beaches around the coast. Old buildings recall its religious past: the church of Agios Nikolaos in the village dates from 1865, and the Arsanas shipyard once sheltered the monks' boats in bad weather. Ammouliani belonged to the monastic community of Mount Athos, and in 1925 the Vatopedi monastery donated it to the Greek state to house refugees from Asia Minor. The Athos peninsula opposite, with its monasteries, is closed to women and has no hotels, so many visitors use the island and the nearby mainland as a base instead.

The beaches & the Drenia islets

Ammouliani's beaches are mostly sandy, and paths and trails from the harbour village reach them around the coast. The main beaches are listed below.

Offshore to the south lie the small Drenia islets, also called Gaidouronisia, ringed by shallow turquoise water and reached by taxi-boat or kaiki. The full run of beaches is set out in the Ammouliani beaches guide.

Things to do on Ammouliani

Beyond the beaches, most of what there is to do on Ammouliani happens on and around the water, and the island is small enough to explore in a day on foot or by bike. The main activities are listed below.

Where to stay on Ammouliani

Most accommodation on Ammouliani is in the harbour village where the ferry arrives, and it is mostly small and family-run, ranging from simple guest rooms and pensions to modern apartments and studios. Two properties on the island are set out below.

Compare the rooms, studios and apartments in the Ammouliani hotels guide.

Getting there: the ferry from Tripiti

Ammouliani is reached by a short ferry from Tripiti, the mainland port opposite the island near Ouranoupoli, and the crossing takes about 5 minutes. To reach Tripiti most visitors fly to Thessaloniki, whose airport lies south of the city, then travel about 122 kilometres, roughly 2 hours, to the Athos peninsula. Ferries also run to the island from Ouranoupoli, from where boats depart for the Drenia islets and for cruises along the coast of the Athos peninsula. The island has no airport and no connection to other Greek islands.
