Fourni Beaches: The Town Beach, Kambi and the Coves

Fourni keeps many small beaches and coves, and several are reached only on foot or by boat. The sandy town beach and the two bays of Kambi are the easiest to reach and the busiest, while Psili Ammos, the coves below Elidaki and the remote naturist beaches reward a short walk into empty scenery. Bring your own water and shade, because most beaches outside the town have no facilities.

Fourni Town beach

The best known beach on Fourni is the one in the harbour village of Fourni Town, a sandy beach with some pebbles divided in two by a small pier. Tamarind trees along the quay and behind the sand give some shade, and there are benches, though there are no umbrellas or sunbeds. Just around the corner towards Psili Ammos lies another small beach, more out of sight of the village and used mainly by the residents, so it feels more private. Both are calm compared with the beaches of the larger islands nearby.

Kambi

Kambi is the most popular beach after the town beach, about 20 minutes south-west of Fourni Town, and it is two beaches divided by a rock. You walk out behind two windmills and either take the steps down or a path on the left that also ends in stairs, which is easier on the way back. Kambi has sand and a few pebbles, quite a few trees for shade, and in high season umbrellas and sunbeds for hire; before the middle of June everything is closed, so bring your own water. South of Kambi the coast runs on into many unspoiled bays where the island is as good as abandoned.

Psili Ammos and the church beach

If you leave the village on the other side of the port you reach two more beaches. The first is Psili Ammos, with a few trees for shade, and just after it comes a beach with a small church. This church beach is the easiest of the far beaches to reach and is always quiet, with shade near the church, though it sits close to a small military barracks. The walk takes about 10 to 20 minutes, both beaches are clean, and a path leads on from the second beach into the hills past a farm and its goats.

Elidaki and the acropolis coves

On the road that climbs out of Fourni Town towards Agios Giannis, the turning marked Elidaki leads down to a group of clean coves. One beach sits below the columns and high walls of an ancient acropolis, with beautiful views over the bay and a small islet just off the coast, though it has no shade. The road splits again lower down and reaches several more beaches, some of them visible far below and hard to reach on foot. These were, in Hans's view, the finest and quietest beaches on the island.

The Chryssomilia-path beaches

The footpath north from Fourni Town towards Chryssomilia passes its own run of beaches. Past the service station the path climbs over the mountain and reaches two churches after about half an hour, a good place to rest in the shade, and then drops to beaches after another twenty minutes or so. One beach has a small house on it, and a little further lies the small settlement of Bali, before the path goes on to the village of Chryssomilia, which clings to the mountain in the north and can usually also be reached by boat.

Naturist beaches and getting around

Fourni is an easy island for naturist beaches. Away from the town beach and Kambi, its remote coves such as Vitsila are usually empty, and the beaches at the north side of the village and the far bays let you swim without swimwear in near-total privacy. Getting around means walking, since there is no car rental on the island and the asphalt soon runs out; you can also hire a small boat or take a kaik from the harbour to reach the coves that have no path. Carry water and shade on every walk, because Fourni has few trees and the summer sun is strong. The villages and harbour that anchor these walks are covered in the Fourni island guide.
