Schinoussa Restaurants: Where to Eat in the Chora

Schinoussa keeps its tavernas in the Chora, where Loza on the square and Deli both cook very well, alongside Margarita's for a meal with a sea view; there is no restaurant strip, so you eat in the village. Hans ate his way through the small choice over four days: Deli, up a staircase with a sea view, was the best, cooking stuffed chicken breast, pork and stifado to a 9 out of 10; Loza on the square makes fresh pasta, pizza and cheese rolls; and Margarita's has good wine and a fine view. Seasonal tavernas also open by some of the beaches. The evenings are quiet, so dinner is a relaxed affair on a terrace.

Deli

Deli is the best table Hans found on Schinoussa, marked by a sign in the main street of the Chora and reached up a staircase to a beautiful view, recommended by the owner of the place he stayed. The food is really very good, and it seems a professional cook is in the kitchen; it was so good that Hans had dinner here three of his four nights on the island. Garlic bread and olives come to the table, and the stuffed chicken breast, the pork and the stifado stew are delightful, with crispy fries alongside. Hans rated it 9 out of 10.

Loza

Loza is a taverna and kafenion on the little square in the Chora, where you can order pizzas, pastas and other snacks or just drink a coffee. It is popular with locals and visitors alike, and someone in the kitchen clearly loves good food: the fresh pasta, including a very good vegetarian version, is delicious, served with olives, cucumber and cheese and fresh bread. It doubles as a kind of pastry shop for sweets and fresh cheese rolls, and its takeaway pizza is the exception to the rule that Greek pizza disappoints. Hans rated it 8.5 out of 10.

Margarita's

Margarita's has a sign on the main road through the Chora and is reached up a little staircase to a wonderful view over the sea. The house wine is prima and the tzatziki comes well loaded with garlic, but the souvlaki tasted factory-made and frozen, which was a little disappointing, while the burger was not bad. It is a pleasant spot for a drink and a view. Hans rated it 6.5 out of 10.

Where to eat by area

Where to eat on Schinoussa comes down mostly to the Chora, which holds Deli, Loza and Margarita's within a few steps of each other. Beyond the village, seasonal tavernas open by some of the beaches, at Tsigouri, Lioliou and Messaria in high season, and several of the hotels, among them Anatoli Studios, Pension Meltemi and Grispos, run their own restaurants.
