Agistri Restaurants: Where to Eat

Agistri eats simply and cheaply, most of it along the Skala waterfront, with beach tavernas at Yialos, Dragonera and Aponissos and a few quiet kitchens at Megalochori. There is no restaurant strip: you eat by the sea where you stay, on grilled fish, traditional Greek dishes and local wine. Skala has the widest choice of tavernas, cafes and bars, backed by minimarkets and a bakery for self-catering; away from it, the tables sit by the beaches.

Skala waterfront

Skala is where most of Agistri eats. Tavernas, cafes and bars line the seafront, backed by minimarkets and a bakery for self-catering, and the choice runs from a quick coffee or a beach snack to a full fish dinner by the water. It is the busiest village on the island — all the ferries from Piraeus dock here — so it keeps the widest range of places and the liveliest evenings, with the open-air cinema running in high season. Prices stay low by Athens standards, and because Skala is small you can walk the whole waterfront and pick your table by what looks good that night.

Beach tavernas and the villages

Away from Skala you eat by the sea. The Yialos beach taverna, on its own beach 500 metres from Skala, serves traditional Greek meals and local wine and does the breakfasts for the Laza Beach and Yialos studios; it is the classic Agistri meal by the water. Megalochori (Myloi), the traditional second port, keeps a few quiet bars and tavernas among its white stone houses, and beach tavernas open at Dragonera, the pebble cove with its relaxing music, and in high season at Aponissos in the south-west — though out of season it is wise to bring your own food and water there. These beach kitchens are seasonal, so check before you count on them off-peak.

Eating on Agistri

Eating on Agistri is a relaxed, low-key affair: no restaurant strip, no gourmet scene, just tavernas by the sea serving grilled fish, traditional Greek dishes and local wine, with the widest choice at Skala and the prettiest tables by the beaches. Self-caterers will find minimarkets, a bakery and a pharmacy in Skala, and the island bus, the minitrain to Myloi and the single taxi make it easy to eat in a different village from the one you sleep in.
